Kim Van

Hello, my name is Kim Van ୧(๑•̀ᗝ•́)૭!

I am a 3rd year Interactive Arts and Technology student at Simon Fraser University, who is aspiring to become an Interactive Designer. This class has really opened my view in life and the endless possibilities there could be: as long as you take the initiative to do it. There is no such thing as a failure, as it is a step that is necessary to finding the right end goal.

In this class, I really tried to understand the idea of  educating about sustainability, but I saw a weak connection. It was a difficult and long journey of exploring ideas, researching, making prototypes and testing. I came up with a definition for sustainability and education. Sustainability is a process that must be an adaptable behaviour: the world is not permanent and static. Education is about learning new ideas and understanding how to use what is learnt to form more new ideas that can be taught to others. With my last prototype “Sustainable Paint Kit”, I finally saw the connection between sustainability and education: Sustainability uses education as fuel to keep it running.

Education does not just have to be fuel for sustainability, it can be a fuel for other passions/interests. I see education as a new idea → adapt the idea as a tool to make a new idea → share the idea → repeat. But it is not a cycle. Education is like a circuit and grows with our life. Circuits opens paths, closes paths and connects the dots. Which sounds much more interesting and fun than having a life stuck in a cycle. (It’s ok if it gets messy, life is messy) ✧٩(•́⌄•́๑)و ✧!
